Universals in the Church Fathers
The so-called problem of universals – i.e. the question of understanding what, if anything, corresponds in reality to our universal concepts and general terms – is as old as philosophy itself and is still at centre of the contemporary philosophical debate. The workshop reconstructs the birth of the problem as well as the way in which it came to acquire a prominent stance in Ancient Greek thought. A number of international experts will meet to discuss all the different moments of the Greek understanding of the problem of universals, from the Presocratics to the Church Fathers. The different philosophical positions will be examined not only from the point of view of their undisputed historical significance, but also with an eye to their presence in the contemporary philosophical discussion.
